Abstract:
Reflects on the theological view expressed in A.M. Klein's novel "The Second Scroll" (1951). As did many of his contemporaries, Klein felt that the Holocaust had broken God's covenant with the people of Israel. Thus, a second scroll was necessary, which would replace the text of the covenant, or the Torah must be emended so that the Holocaust would be inscribed in its text. The miracle of revival of the Hebrew language in the State of Israel, the language in which the Torah was given, enables the "First Scroll" to evolve into the "Second Scroll"; in fact, it signifies the beginning of a new cycle in the history of the Jewish people.
