Abstract:
Studies the acquisition of 4,000 Aryanized Jewish businesses and properties in Vienna between 1938-39 by 1,000 members of the SS (out of 3,000 that were in the city). Focuses on three cases, which highlight the degree of corruption and nepotism involved in the process. Fridolin Glass, military leader of the failed Nazi coup in Austria in July 1934, appropriated the chemical factory of Kreidl, Heller & Co. through an act of terror. Hanns Blaschke, another leader of the July putsch, who became deputy mayor of Vienna in 1938 and mayor in 1943, took over the villa of Leopold Haas. Robert Bandera, a young SS officer, aquired three thriving businesses owned by Paul Winter through corruption and collaboration with Peter Egon Friese, an employee at the acquisitions office of the Vienna district administration. Pp. 999-1005 contain short biographies of the above-mentioned persons and of Josef Fitzthum, deputy Chief of Police in Vienna, a key figure in the network of SS-members turned owners of Jewish property and businesses, though lacking all qualifications for running the businesses.
