Kurzfassung:
A paper delivered at the colloquium "Penser Auschwitz" held in Paris, November 1988. Surveys memoirs published in France between 1944-47 on the authors’ experiences of concentration camps in France, Germany, and Poland - by Georges Wellers, Louise Alcan, Julien Unger, and many others. These texts give witness to the process of extermination of the Jews. They also answer questions such as: What was the reaction of Jews to the persecution? Did their attitude to France change? What meaning did they attribute to their, sometimes imposed, Jewishness? Concludes that although a vast literature on the subject existed, the extermination of the Jews was not present in French consciousness in the first years after the war. Attempts to discover the reasons for this phenomenon.
