Abstract:
Focuses on Christian anti-Judaic aspects of the still popular 1842 novella. Notes the presence of religious stereotypes, e.g. condemnation of "Jewish" legalism and desire for vengeance. Views "Die Judenbuche" as a Christian morality play in which Christians are often portrayed as having negative "Jewish" characteristics. Notes that the anti-Judaic polemics in this work have often been ignored or "explained away" by critics.
