Abstract:
Since "Auschwitz negates all systems" (Elie Wiesel), there is a desire for negation of the Holocaust and complicity in its legacy, which creates a defense system whose expression is the "professionalization" of the liberal arts, among them philosophy. Questions, along with Jacques Derrida, Martin Heidegger's inadequate response to the Holocaust (e.g. he has said the "recording of destruction is getting tiresome"). Two comments made in a lecture series in December 1949 were withdrawn for the sake of maintaining his philosophical attitude. Heidegger's post-Holocaust writings connect Being with an exclusive concept of man, one which excludes not only those reduced to ashes but especially those who still bear witness. Says that this exclusive concept of man is the prize of philosophy's defense system.
