Abstract:
Discusses three sections of the diary of Abraham Lewin, which were recently identified at Yad Vashem. Lewin, a teacher and historian, was born in Warsaw in 1893. During the war he worked for the ghetto's welfare organizations, as well as for the "Oneg Shabbat" archives. He was killed in January 1943. The authors discovered 52 additional pages of his diary, which was first published in the early 1950s. They cover the dates 14-15 May, 13-15 June, and 27 June-10 July 1942. These pages contain details on the dire situation of the Jews shortly before the deportation of August. Pp. 16-46 present excerpts (translated from the Yiddish) which vividly describe the growing tension in the ghetto, as well as experiences and feelings of Lewin's acquaintances and descriptions of events in other Jewish communities.
