Abstract:
Discusses the anonymous pamphlet of correspondences, entitled "Epistolae obscurorum virorum", which circulated in 16th-century Germany. Its satirical criticism, generally directed against the Church, also contains anti-Jewish material. Presents extracts from several letters in which the antisemitism is blatant; they mainly focus on the controversy at the time between Johannes Pfefferkorn, a converted Jew who expressed fierce hostility to Judaism, and Johannes Reuchlin, the humanist and Hebraist. The letters attack Pfefferkorn in violent terms, not as an antisemite but as a Jew who, "like all other converted Jews", can never be accepted as a true Christian.
