Abstract:
Discussing the motivation for mass Ukrainian collusion in the Nazi genocide of Jews, dwells on the role of the Ukrainian Auxiliary Police in the Final Solution in Eastern Galicia. This police force, established in August 1941, was indispensable during Nazi roundups of Jews in 1942-43. Its leadership asked the Germans to allow the Ukrainian policemen to kill Jews during the roundups, and the force perpetrated many unsanctioned killings. Contends that the annihilation of Jews in Eastern Galicia was a socially-approved norm among Ukrainians. A primary objective of Ukrainian collaboration with the Nazis was to remove the Jews from this disputed region, as a first step in creating an ethnically homogeneous Ukrainian state. The autonomous Ukrainian police symbolized Ukrainian independence. States that Ukrainians who participated in the genocide of Jews did so not only for mundane motives, but in accordance with the aims of the Ukrainian political leadership.
