Abstract:
Contends that those who hastily dismissed and rejected Daniel Goldhagen's book "Hitler's Willing Executioners" were short-sighted. In the historiography of the last two decades, there has been a tendency toward normalization of the Holocaust. The anger engendered by Goldhagen's book derives mainly from its challenge to this new trend. Criticizes Goldhagen's conception of German antisemitism: not always was it so strong and pervasive; the rise of modern antisemitism in the interwar period affected not only Germany; there were many motives other than antisemitism which induced Germans to vote for Hitler. Goldhagen also neglects circumstances other than popular antisemitism that helped Hitler to pursue his anti-Jewish policies. However, in some cases Goldhagen gives a better perspective of the events and their motives than contemporary scholars - e.g. Christopher Browning, who ascribes the Nazi atrocities to wartime brutalization, or Hans Mommsen, who lays all the responsibility on those who gave the orders.
