Abstract:
Based on studies carried out in 1990-93 and on data on anti-immigrant and anti-Jewish offenses (such as personal assaults, desecration of Jewish cemeteries and Holocaust memorials) in this period and earlier, discusses the dynamics of the attitudes toward Jews and foreigners in western and eastern Germany. States that it is mainly East German youth who have become much more antisemitic and xenophobic since 1989-90. One of the causes is political polarization in the former GDR and lack of, or passivity of, the anti-rightist, moderate milieu in eastern German areas. A disturbing aspect in the rise of antisemitic and xenophobic violence is the emergence of an extreme-right youth sub-culture in both parts of Germany.
