Abstract:
Traces briefly the Nazi policy toward Gypsies in 1933-45 in Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, and some areas of Poland, the USSR, and Yugoslavia. Dwells briefly on Gypsy-Jewish relations in the ghetto of Lodz. Compares Nazi policy and the genocide of the Gypsies to that of the Jews. Argues that, despite some parallels, the treatment of each group differed fundamentally. The Nazis never formulated a plan for a "final solution of the Gypsy problem" analogous to that of the Jews. Large numbers of "racially pure" and "socially adjusted" Gypsies were exempted from deportation and murder. During the last stage of the war some deported Gypsies were even permitted to return to Germany.
