Abstract:
In 2002 a survey was conducted in four schools (one of them Jewish) in Kharkov, in which 107 students in grades 10-11 were asked to write essays on the Holocaust. Analyzes the results using the method of critical discourse analysis. The survey shows that most of the students were informed concerning the Holocaust, despite the fact that some history textbooks give very scant information on it and some teachers ignore the topic entirely. 17% of the students expressed antisemitic views, 11% of them in overtly crude language, and some justified the Holocaust. 30% of the essays were written in the framework of everyday life discourse (i.e. the students' personal views); in many of them, antisemitic stereotypes and explanations of the Holocaust were expressed. 18% wrote in the framework of anti-racist and anti-nationalist discourse. 78.5% expressed negative emotions aroused by the Holocaust. The students at the Jewish school used historical discourse more often than did the students from the non-Jewish schools. The essays also revealed obvious gender-based differences.
