Abstract:
Discusses the reactions of Bernard-Lazare (1865-1903) to antisemitism. In 1890 he advised assimilation and expressed hostility to Jews by distinguishing between "juif" (money-grubbing Jew) and "israelite" (refined Jew). By 1895, he blamed the failure of assimilation on French society and suggested that antisemitism was a way to defend an antiquated tradition. The illegality of the Dreyfus trial prompted Bernard-Lazare to write "The Truth about the Dreyfus Affair" (1896). Argues that, like Herzl, the Affair evoked nationalism in Bernard-Lazare, and he advocated a secular Zionism. Contends that his relevance to both the Dreyfus Affair and Zionism has not yet been recognized.
