Abstract:
Agrees with Arendt's thesis that the racist imperialism of the 19th century was a crucial factor in the rise of antisemitism - i.e. there is a basic logic that equates the Jew and the colonized as dual victims of the same, insidious "race-thinking". Hers was the first attempt to link antisemitism and imperialism. Using the case of French colonization of North Africa and the British colonization of South Africa in the late 19th century as examples, describes the emergence of a myth that the great powers were motivated by Jewish financial interests. Criticizes Arendt for her depiction of the Jews as mere bystanders in the colonization process. Concludes that the Jews were neither just bystanders nor eager participants: they were both colonizers and colonized, seen as "Europeans" or as "Arabs", or as assimilated middlemen or scapegoated pariahs.
