Abstract:
Considers that antisemitism not only influences the plot of the 1867 novel (which ends with the artistic dissolution and madness of an artist, caused by the materialistic Jewess Manette), but is also linked in the work with aesthetic and philosophical questions that preoccupied the co-authors, Edmond and Jules de Goncourt. Jewishness is presented as a danger in that it may be concealed from people even when it is apparent. It destabilizes the relation between the particular and the universal. On the one hand, this is disruptive; on the other, it reflects the ambivalence that the authors themselves felt about the relationship between art and reality. There are elements of economic and other types of antisemitism in the stereotypes employed.
