Abstract:
Argues that in the Gospels the Jews are presented as foils to Jesus. Heated rhetoric against "Jews" (whether actual Jews or Jewish Christians is unclear) can be found in Paul's writings. After the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, Christian theologians, like Eusebius and Clement of Alexandria, touted the transfer of divine promises to the Christians. Tertullian provided an example of how anti-Judaic rhetoric could be deployed against Jews in an antisemitic way. In contrast, Origen showed how debate with Judaism need not be based on derogation, but his model was not influential.
