Abstract:
The negative attitude of Kraus toward the Jews, expressed in his journalism and prose, reflected his striving for total assimilation with the German language and culture. Having internalized antisemitic views, he widely contemned Jews for materialism, capitalism, liberalism, and popular journalism. He downplayed Austrian antisemitism, and showed an affinity for antisemites like Karl Lueger and H.S. Chamberlain, while mocking Theodor Herzl and having no sympathy for Alfred Dreyfus or Leopold Hilsner. While Kraus may not have intended to stigmatize the Austrian Jewish minority as a whole, his prophetic rage often targeted Jews, focusing on them as sources of Viennese decadence in business, culture, science, etc. His sympathy for Otto Weininger ( a self-hating Jew) was not surprising, since Kraus himself was a striking example of an anti-Jewish Jew.
