Abstract:
In the summer of 1942, when Rommel’s Panzer Army was designated to conquer Palestine, the "Einsatzkommando Egypt", headed by Walther Rauff, was formed. The unit of 24 men was to be deployed in Palestine after its occupation in order to implement the Final Solution there. Dwells on the personalities of the unit’s officers. The Nazi leadership began to plan this invasion in 1941, when the SS had gained experience in mass murder of Jews in Eastern Europe. The Nazis wanted to draft local Arab nationalists, for whom Hitler’s Germany and its cause were very popular, as helpers. Antisemitism was the decisive factor linking Nazism with Arab nationalism. The most important Arab collaborator, and a rabid antisemite, was Haj Amin al-Husaini. When the Germans were routed by the British in Libya and Egypt in fall 1942, Rauff’s unit, increased to ca. 100 men, was sent to Tunisia, where they engaged in registering the Jews and deploying them for forced labor in constructing fortifications. Just before the liberation of Tunisia in May 1943, the unit was transferred to Naples and then to Corsica.
