Abstract:
Examines the ambivalent politics in regard to the "Jewish question" in the Czech puppet government headed by Alois Eliáš (April 1939-September 1941). Eliáš was most probably not antisemitic, and his laws excluding Jews from public and economic life were dictated by utilitarian motives. Eliáš did not succumb to Nazi pressure and did not introduce a racial definition of the Jew. His attempt to exempt some Jews from the anti-Jewish laws failed because of the German counteraction. On 28 September 1941 Elias was arrested for his contacts with the Czech government-in-exile and later executed; immediately after his arrest the deportations of Czech Jews began. Notes that the passivity of Czech governments in regard to Jewish issues led to the indifference of the Czech population toward the fate of the Jews.
