Abstract:
Traces a path from Paul's Gnosticism to Hitler's Nazism. Paul's Christian Gnosticism had two basic beliefs: that the world is evil (due to original sin) and that it requires a cosmic sacrifice for man's redemption. Luther expanded on that, preaching that Satan rules in this world, and that good deeds are not necessary for the redemption of the Christian soul. Discusses Luther's hatred of the Catholic Church and of Judaism, both of which preached toward morality and reward and punishment for man's deeds. Contends that Luther's Jew-hatred is the source of modern German antisemitism. Goethe's Faust strengthened Lutheran theology's belief that man belongs to Satan, but went a step further in presenting evil and amoral hedonism as a supreme value and guiding principle for man. Hitler's Reich was the actualization of these beliefs, and the Jews were the sacrifice.
