Abstract:
Analyzes the influences of Kafka on Anna Seghers' novel "Transit" (1991), set in Marseille in 1940-41. The novel is based on Seghers' own experiences; she fled from Paris to Marseille in 1940 after her husband was arrested and sent to a labor camp. In the novel she describes the Kafkaesque difficulties faced by refugees in Vichy France in obtaining visas, which were in reality compounded for her by the fact that she was a German emigrant and a communist, as well as a Jew.
