Abstract:
A study of Jewish Lithuanian victims' views of their persecutors during and after the Holocaust, based on testimonies collected between 1990-2005 in Lithuania (in Yiddish) and in Israel (in Hebrew). Argues for the importance of taking into account the context and the language of testimony in ascribing meaning to Holocaust perpetration. Discusses whether the victims viewed the perpetrators as individual human beings or as part of a mechanized structure. The answer has much to do with their geographic and linguistic vantage point at the time when their testimony was recorded. Pp. 510-525 contain examples of accounts by Jewish victims.
