Abstract:
Examines the image of "the Jew" in Jewish texts and drawings (from the Bible to the present day), and in antisemitic texts and drawings, pointing to the fact that "the Jew" is almost always depicted as a man. In Christian culture and literature, also, the Jew is almost always a man (from the depictions of Jesus to the present day). Focuses on the male and the (fewer) female Jewish bodies in writings and in art, which often relate to the Jews' hair and genitals. There was and still is a stereotypical view of how the Jew looks, speaks, and acts. Discusses (on pp. 91-96) the preoccupation of rabbinical literature with the issues of Niddah (menstruation) and the Mikvah (the Jewish woman's rite of purification in water after her menstruation).
