Abstract:
Perceives a postwar trend among both Christians and Jews to see Jesus as a victim and symbol of Auschwitz. States that already in his crucifixion by the Romans, Jesus died as one of the Jewish people, whom the Romans crucified in great numbers. In Auschwitz he suffered with the Jews; like him, they were, collectively, the "servant of God" whose suffering redeems humanity. Both Chagall and Celan use the crucified Jesus to represent the suffering Jewish people.
