Abstract:
Discusses some leading Islamic ideological "leitmotifs" that have been determinative for the history of Jewish-Muslim relations. Discerns four groups of paradigms defining Muslim perceptions of the Jews and of the State of Israel to the present day. These include originating paradigms, reflecting the role ascribed to the Jews by the Qur'an and early Islamic history; historico-legal paradigms, consisting of dhimmi regulations for the Jews; contemporary paradigms of Islamic neo-antisemitism; as well as positive paradigms of acceptance and affirmation. Addressing the impact of negative paradigms of Muslim-Jewish relations and the promotion of positive paradigms instead constitutes an urgent challenge facing contemporary Islam.
