Abstract:
Analyzes the process of emancipation of the Jews in France after the revolution and during the turbulent 19th century. To understand why many Jews emerged from the social process of assimilation while others turned away from the emancipatory measures taken by the state, discusses the long-term effects of the Revolution itself, for its primarily long-term consequences would shape the strategies for future generations of Jews in France until contemporary times. A comparative focus on the Jews of southwestern and of eastern France enables us to understand the extent to which profound differences alienating these communities from each other gave rise to altogether different strategies.
