Abstract:
Focuses on "The Authoritarian Personality" (1950), by Adorno et al. Adorno highlighted the psychic and social function of antisemitism, which transformed frustration and repression into hostility, and discussed the psychopathology of racism. He noted that prejudices in the U.S. could be transferred from targeting Jews to targeting other minorities, e.g. Blacks. Adorno's use of a scale to measure antisemitism revealed that, even after the Holocaust, many Americans were responsive to extreme antisemitic ideology and stereotypes. Adorno also elaborated on the way that the American culture industry inculcated neo-fascist ideas. He stressed that socioeconomic alienation was present also in the working class (not only in the poorer classes), and that crises of capitalism engendered antisemitism. Criticizes Adorno's phenomenological approach for failing to emphasize fascism as a factor which is changing and changeable.
