Abstract:
Discusses a manuscript of an unfinished play by Sartre (in the Bibliothèque Nationale) which deals with the case of Abraham Feller, an American Jew and an intellectual, chief legal counsel at the United Nations and appointed just a few weeks before his death as acting Assistant Secretary General of the U.N. He committed suicide in New York in 1952 during a United States Senate investigation into communist subversion among U.S. staff at the U.N. The Senate Committees headed by Pat McCarran and Joe McCarthy targeted Jews, in particular, for investigation, indicating that American anti-communism also smacked of antisemitism.
