Abstract:
Analyzes Shakespeare's thinking in regard to commerce in "The Merchant of Venice", in part comparing it with Marx's essay "On the Jewish Question". Suggests that Shakespeare used the conventional stereotype of the Jew in his time to examine the morality of the free market. Contends that if the play reveals Shylock to be morally a worse character than the Christians, it is disquieting that no voice within the play challenges the Christian and antisemitic explanation of his badness.
