Abstract:
The Jews occupy a special place among the "strangers" that Juvenal accuses of perverting Rome and destroying the old Roman spirit. The Jews, who are mentioned in three of his "Satires", are portrayed either as lazy and vile beggars or as luxury-loving, debauched rich people. He presents the Jewish religion as ridiculous and terrifying, and the Jews as the enemy of the human species. His main charge, however, is that Jews seduce Romans to convert. In order to counteract the attraction of Judaism, a known fact in 1st-2nd-century Rome, he deliberately maligned the Jews.
