Abstract:
A positive relationship between higher levels of educational attainment and social and political liberalism (especially tolerance) has been found in the past in many studies. However, recent findings indicate that this effect is not universal but varies according to nationality. The existence of "enlightened" views in any population depends on the length of time a country has had a liberal regime, and on its degree of religious heterogeneity. This hypothesis was tested in regard to antisemitism in West Germany, France, Austria, and the USA between 1959-1984, and the results are presented here.
