Abstract: Appeared also in "The Jewish Response to German Culture" (1985) 174-196.
Abstract: German-Jewish women suffered from discrimination both as Jews and as women within German society. In 1904, the Jüdischer Frauenbund (League of Jewish Women) was founded. Cooperation with the German feminist movement on women's issues, and against antisemitism, continued throughout the Weimar period, though "subterranean currents" of antisemitism were felt even then. After 1933, however, there was little solidarity between German and Jewish women. The JFB played an important part in sustaining the community until its dissolution in 1938.
