Abstract:
During the 1930s, Father Coughlin became a major media figure with his famous radio broadcasts. However, his attacks against the Jews and his support for Hitler finally made him unacceptable when the U.S. was attacked and joined the war. In 1942 Coughlin was effectively silenced. Examines the coverage of his activities in seven major journals. A statistical analysis of the references to his major themes (including antisemitism and pro-Nazism) shows that the press took a generally negative attitude towards Coughlin.
