Abstract:
The article suggests three representative functions of the body elect in the democratic system: The reflective function, when the range of political consensuses among different strata in population and in parliament is similar; the amplifier function, when there are stronger conflicts on the public front than in the body elect, and the pacifier function when the converse situation prevails. The parliament can perform one or all of the functions depending on different circumstances. Each function contributes in its way to the stability of the political system. Empirical data, collected concurrently by two surveys probing the scope of political consensuses existing in the Israeli parliament (Knesset) and in the public, establish the amplifier function as the major and predominant representative function in the Israeli parliament. However, further research is required to provide more evidence about the crystallization of the actual representative functions in modern and open democracies.
