Abstract:
Summarizes part of the findings of a 1981 research project on the teaching of the history of the Weimar Republic in a sample of German secondary schools, based on analysis of curricula and textbooks as well as interviews with teachers. Whereas all scholars agree that antisemitism was an important element in the Weimar period, it appears that the schools ignore its existence outside the Nazi Party. Teaching of antisemitism almost uniformly mentions three stages: medieval anti-Judaism; 19th-century racism, represented by two non-Germans - Gobineau and Chamberlain; and Nazism. Thus, students are not taught how widespread antisemitism was among all sectors of the German population who were thus prepared to accept Nazi racism.
