Kurzfassung:
A comparative analysis of two versions of the edict of the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492: the version addressed to Castile which is better known, and the version addressed to Aragon, Catalonia, and Valencia which is published here for the first time. Focuses on differences in the reasons given for the expulsion. While the Castilian version emphasizes religious reasons - the sins of the Conversos and their bad influence on Christians, the Aragonese version refers mainly to the practice of usury by the Jews. This analysis reinforces the hypothesis that the Inquisition influenced the king's decision to expel the Jews, and that Inquisition sources drafted the edict. The reasons appearing in the Aragonese version were probably intended to appeal to the lower urban classes (farmers and artisans) to support the expulsion. Pp. 164-167 contain the full text of the Aragonese version in Spanish.
