Abstract:
A memorial ceremony took place in Jedwabne on 10 July 2001 during which the President of Poland, Aleksander Kwasniewski, asked for pardon in the name of Poles. Describes the background to the ceremony - the shocked reaction in Poland after the expose of the events in Jedwabne in 1941 in Agnieszka Arnold's film "Gdzie jest moj brat Kain?" ["Where Is My Brother Cain?" (1998)] and by Jan T. Gross in his book "Sasiedzi" ["Neighbors" (2000)]. Both provoked hot discussions in the press, in which there were attempts to negate the facts, which destroyed the self-image of Poles as victims of the Nazis. However, a number of historians and journalists were willing to revise Polish history in the name of historical truth. Concludes that Gross's book contributed greatly to the "national catharsis" in Poland.
