Abstract:
The Fourth Gospel repeatedly emphasizes Jesus’s superiority to certain venerated figures (Abraham, Moses, John the Baptist). This article argues that a contrast between Jesus and Jacob also permeates the Gospel, showing traces at John 1:51; 4:1-30; and 20:12. In particular, the Gospel indicates that Jesus provides gifts superior to those that Jacob provides, and Jesus is a better guide to worship. The Gospel argues along similar lines for Jesus’s superiority over Abraham, Moses, and John the Baptist. The effort to indicate Jesus’s superiority to Jacob has roots in controversies between members of the Johannine community and Samaritans.
