Abstract:
Describes the activities of the Kommandostab Reichsführer-SS, established in May 1941, which included three SS brigades numbering 25,000 men recruited from the regular SS and the Death's Head units. They were, in effect, the private army of Heinrich Himmler, but operated at times as an independent force and at times as an auxiliary force under the command of other authorities which took part in the murder of Jews. Their purpose was to fill the gap left by the Einsatzgruppen which were short on manpower. The murder of Jews was carried out under the pretext of anti-partisan warfare. Focuses on the operations of the First Brigade and the Cavalry Brigade in the area of the Pripet Marshes in July-August 1941, and particularly in Pinsk. States that although it is difficult to ascertain how many Jews were killed by the SS brigades, the Kommandostab killed at least 100,000 Jews in 1941.
