Abstract:
Describes the last act of persecution of Hungarian Jews by Eichmann in November 1944. Ca. 50,000 Jews were sent on marches, under harsh conditions, from Budapest to the Austrian border, to build fortifications. Discusses the roles of Hungarian diplomats and Nazi officials in this irrational undertaking. Szálasi and the Arrow Cross were easily convinced by the Nazis to cooperate. The Nazis carried out the death marches along a main highway, although it was needed to transport soldiers and equipment for the war effort. Both Eichmann and the Arrow Cross wanted to get rid of the Jews at all costs, and thousands died during the marches. The Jews were handed over to Dieter Wisliceny's SS unit at the border town of Hegyeshálom; they were then sent to work in various places, and many perished. Notes that ca. 1,500 Jews were rescued by Raoul Wallenberg and his colleagues at Hegyeshálom.
