Abstract:
Discusses the punishment of crucifixion which was employed by the Romans throughout the Empire, the mass crucifixions of Jews in Eretz Israel, and Jewish sages' opposition to this cruel punishment. States that it is a tragic paradox that Jesus' suffering on the cross, representative of Jewish suffering of the period, was so readily adopted by the Church Fathers for the absurd claim that the Jewish people must bear collective responsibility for the death of Jesus. In fact, the cross demonstrates Jesus' solidarity with his people, the Jews, and their national suffering in history.
