Abstract:
This article presents the approach of Rav Abraham Tzvi Eisenstadt (Lithuania, 19th century) to the study of Kabbalah. In particular, it concentrates on his view of study of the Zohar, as expressed in his monumental composition Pitchei Teshuva, among the most important supercommentaries on the Shulkhan Arukh (Code of Jewish Law). The Pitchei Teshuva is a sefer me’asef (lit. literature of collection), in which Eisenstadt directs his readers to thousands of responses from responsa literature, generally avoiding an explicit statement of his opinion. With regard to kabbalistic studies, Eisenstadt refers the reader to responses from five different authors, in which each articulated his objection to studies of this kind. These references may allow us to deduce his opinion on the matter, as the methodology, in which he quotes only a single approach, differs from his usual approach, in which he presents various and often opposing opinions. It seems that Eisenstadt’s opinion against the wisdom of Kabbalah was influenced by the Austro-Hungarian sages, from whom he was descended. This stance was contrary to the opinion of the sages of Lithuania, where Eisenstadt lived – at that time, the Lithuanian sages in fact learned and practiced the wisdom of Kabbalah.
