Abstract:
Documents correspondence in the Nazi period between the Interior Ministry and local communities that wanted to convert the land of Jewish cemeteries to other uses. The Ministry refused these requests, arguing that while Jews remained, they would require burial and, after all, they could not be interred next to Aryans. After the deportations, it was decided that the communities might take over the land, but under strict adherence to the laws governing cemeteries in general, Jewish ones not excepted. These specified (partly for hygienic reasons) that they must be left undisturbed for at least 25 years after the last burial. All the correspondents clearly assumed that the Jews would not return. also chronicles the postwar legal disputes over responsibility for the upkeep of the cemeteries.
