Abstract:
Describes the establishment and aims of Goebbels' Propaganda Ministry and, within it, the Reichsfilmkammer, an important function of which was to disseminate racial ideology. Discusses the negative features of Jews in Nazi film propaganda. Focuses on films produced between 1939-41, especially "Die Rothschilds", "Jud Süss", and "Der ewige Jude". These three, released in 1940, were intended to convince the German population that a "Jewish question" did exist and needed to be solved, to justify government policies against the Jews, and to prepare the public for the killing of the Jews. Demonstrates, though, that propaganda had its limitations - by the time "Der ewige Jude" was released the public had had enough of virulent antisemitic propaganda. The film was shown mainly to the populations of the occupied countries and to guards at the extermination camps. Overt antisemitic propaganda did not figure prominently in German film after 1941 because of wider policy decisions and the fact that the public had been convinced of the existence of a "Jewish problem" but was indifferent to it.
