Abstract:
During the military dictatorship of 1976-83, Jews were victimized ten times more than non-Jews and persecuted or killed often in ways that recalled the Nazis. In the post-dictatorship period, in contrast to Europe, the media has not been grossly anti-Zionist and local Islamic organizations have condemned terror. However, as the reluctance to solve the AMIA bombing and other affairs have shown, antisemitism found allies in anti-democratic forces. Both right-wing and left-wing extremists have resorted to the political use of antisemitic traditions (Catholic anti-Jewish prejudice and stereotypes) to try to undermine progress toward democracy. The current belief in the influence of international Jewry may be a "soft" version of the conspiracy theory. 2005 saw a doubling of antisemitic incidents and increased radical anti-Zionism. While there has been some anti-Zionism among Argentinian Muslims, it is hardly comparable to that elsewhere, for example in Europe.
