Abstract:
Relates the story of three Jewish historical pageants presented in the United States. "The Eternal Road" (1937), produced by Meyer Weisgal, and created by Max Reinhardt, Franz Werfel, and Kurt Weill, all of them refugees from Germany, sought to boost Jewish spirits in a period of intense German and worldwide antisemitism. "We Will Never Die" (1943), written by Ben Hecht, sought to spur the American government to take an active role in saving the Jews of Europe. "A Flag Is Born" (1946), by Ben Hecht, bitterly attacked rich and powerful American Jews, world statesmen, and especially the British, for opposing Jewish immigration to Palestine, and called for a campaign for the creation of a Jewish state. All three pageants received very little support from Jewish leaders and organizations in America.
