Abstract:
"Germania", a daily newspaper and one of two major organs of the Center Party, was published in Berlin and associated with the conservative wing of political Catholicism. Examines its coverage of the anti-Jewish riots in Germany in 1881 and of the pogroms in Russia in 1881-82. The antisemitic press, and "Germania" in particular, did not advocate anti-Jewish violence but identified with antisemitism. "Germania" tended to justify anti-Jewish outbursts in Russia and antisemitism in Germany, but condemned violence perpetrated by German Protestants. Dismisses the theory that the anti-Catholic "Kulturkampf" moderated Catholic antisemitism. The example of "Germania" shows that Catholic conservatives blamed the Jews for the "Kulturkampf". The paper linked alleged Jewish anti-Catholic incitement, or at least Jewish lack of sympathy for Catholics as victims of the "Kulturkampf", with Catholic anti-Jewish violence.
