Abstract:
Exploring the Odessa pogrom of 1871, focuses on the twelve drawings made by the artist Vasilii Vakhrenov, an eyewitness of the riots. His representation of the pogrom may substantiate the latest viewpoint that, contrary to the classical explanation, it was not the tsarist administration which fomented the anti-Jewish riots in the late 19th century. The drawings display soldiers and officials trying to stop the disorder and punishing the rioters. Notwithstanding the hospitable climate for anti-Jewish violence fostered by the autocracy's policy of antisemitism, and despite the obvious sympathy of the "forces of law and order" with the rioters, the drawings indicate that the tsarist officials took measures to suppress the pogrom. Warns against attributing the pogroms solely to religious motives - the riots had complicated social causes. Pp. 80-91 contain Vakhrenov's drawings.
