Abstract:
Examines right-wing violence in Germany, which increased dramatically after unification and remained at a relatively high level during the 1990s. Ca. 60% of the violent incidents were directed against foreigners. Antisemitic attacks, including desecration of graves and memorial sites, accounted for ca. 2% of the violent incidents. Given that the number of Jews in Germany is ca. one-hundredth that of foreigners, the rate of anti-Jewish attacks per capita is high. Skinheads and neo-Nazis have played a significant role in the violence, but at least one-third of the violent incidents were perpetrated by informal groups of unaffiliated young males. Contemporary xenophobia is not only linked to aggressive elements of youth culture, but appears to be increasingly connected to local and international ideological networks. Focuses on developments in the Skinhead culture.
