Abstract:
Compares two fictional monologues put in the mouths of characters representing Adolf Hitler, and relates them to other works by Broch and Steiner, both of whom were Jews of Central European background. Broch’s work [published in English in the "Saturday Review of Literature" (21 October 1944); the German original, "Letzter Ausbruch eines Grössenwahns: Hitlers Abschiedsrede", was published in his collected works], is a dramatic expression of his studies of mass psychology and politics and his understanding of the Nazi leader as a pathological demagogue. Faults the English translation for lacking the author’s cues warning readers about the madness of the speaker, Hitler. Steiner’s novel (1979) contains a speech by "Hitler" that is also presented as dangerously appealing rhetoric.
